What Changed Each Year
The CNN Era: Accurate for Simple Foods, Brittle for Everything Else

However, the 2026 landscape has a wide accuracy gap between apps. The lowest-ranked app in our benchmark sits at 55% ID rate and ±35% portion MAPE — essentially 2023-era accuracy. The divergence has widened, not narrowed, as leading apps pulled ahead while others failed to keep up with the pace of AI development.
Five Forces Driving AI Calorie Tracking Forward
1. Training Dataset Scale and Diversity
The single biggest driver of identification accuracy improvements. Apps that invested in labeling millions of images across global cuisines outperformed those that didn't by 15–20 percentage points. Data quality matters as much as quantity — well-labeled regional dishes outperform larger noisy datasets.
2. Architecture Shifts: CNN → Transformer → Multimodal
